This kind of thing drives me cr.az.y. I think my brain is too full! <br /><br />So, instead I'll post this photo from 1998 when I visited India. We visited the Taj Mahal and have just recently realized that it is literally fading from the picture. This photo was taken on a very clear day and it certainly wasn't foggy as it appears now. This is a great example of how necessary it is to preserve your photos! To the best of my recollection, my statement was almost always "I don't have a creative bone in my body" or "I can't even draw a stick figure" or "I have no artistic ability, whatsoever." <br /><br />And then I grew up. <br /><br />And I discovered I am creative, I do have artistic ability, and I <u>still</u> can't draw a stick figure. But the creativity is there. Sometimes its easy to find. Sometimes it's hidden and I have to find it. Sometimes I just have to keep plodding along, even if I end up abhoring what I've created.<br /><br />So the question is, was that creativity there all along? Was my definition of "creative" what made me think I had none? And now that I've discovered I have it, what if I lose it?<br /><br />Applying all of the above to scrapbooking in general can be scary. For someone who wants to (desperately - I'm not ashamed to admit it) find their niche in the scrapbooking industry, it's downright terrifying. And if I let myself think about it too long, I often think about abandoning that dream. <br /><br />Enter this book. It's hard to put into words the challenges and blessings the past year have presented. And that is going to be my word again in 2012. This past year so many things started happening that I've been praying and working for. But what usually happens, did. I became overwhelmed and exhausted. So, this year I'm adding the word "balance" to the mix.<br /><br /><b>Balance: </b>a state of equilibrium; equal distribution of weight, amount; mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgement<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;"><b>Gumption</b>: initiative, resourcefulness, courage, spunk, guts, common sense</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I'm going to work on setting priorities, remaining calm, saying yes to the important things and no to the unnecessary (this is probably the hardest part). Most importantly, I'm determined to enjoy life. Somehow that happened <u>again</u> this year for me. I had so many grand intentions for this first week in December. And then life got in the way. <br /><br />In a good way, though, I'm learning to just let things go. To take the pressure (mostly pressure I create for myself) off and learn to embrace and enjoy the moment without the weight of "I intended to do this and this, but failed" and "I should have....". Life is a lot more fun this way. :) <br /><br />So, the first week of December showed up and I celebrated with the White Christmas movie lovin' <a href="http://www.cropgirl.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Misti </a>and the "I'm so tired of watching this movie every year and listening to you and Misti quote every.single.line" <a href="http://www.laurelenglehardt.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Laurel</a>. We watched Christmas movies, went to see Breaking Dawn, made take and bake cookies, and became addicted to playing <a href="http://www.pagat.com/patience/spitemal.html" target="_blank">Spite & Malice</a>. Laurel even snuck in time to work on her Christmas cards. <br /><br />I didn't take many photos, and the two I did take turned out horribly, but who cares. It's the memories that matter. Here's my teeny tiny tree...with no tree skirt. Maybe next year. Or next week. I hope you all had a wonderful time! I had the most wonderful time with my "second" family, the <a href="http://www.laurelenglehardt.blogspot.com/">Englehardt's</a> on the actual day (and of course I didn't take any photos), and the rest of the time was spent in my little house. Snug and warm and quiet. It was wonderful! <br /><br />Here's what I've been thinking about the past couple of days.<br /><ol><li>It's the end of November....yikes! This year has flown by. </li><li>I am at the point of really wanting to buy gifts that are handmade by me or someone else, or at least made in America. Is anyone else there, too? </li><li>I've always been interested in #2, but it seems to be becoming more and more important to me. </li><li>Bless my poor children when they come along....I'll be the crazy mom asking people to only give them books and wooden toys on their birthdays. </li><li>My day job has been crazy lately. Incredibly busy, but not as stressful as it has earlier in the year. I'm thankful for that. </li><li>Fun, crafty jobs abound in my free time. I'm super excited about them and wish I could do them instead of my "day job".</li><li>I have a huuuuuuuuuge photo project in the works. Looking forward to it, but dreading it all at the same time!</li><li>I can't decide if I like Dunkin' Donuts or McDonald's coffee better. So, I just keep taste testing. </li><li>One thing I do know about coffee....a Starbucks extra hot peppermint latte is Christmas in a cup.</li><li>I'm already worried about when the peppermint syrup option goes away at the end of the holiday. On the search for peppermint syrup to store up for the year.</li><li>Which reminds me that I need to get to Hobby Lobby for their white Christmas candles. They are my favorite scent (and one I don't have any sort of allergic reaction to) - peppermint.</li><li>I'm having Pinterest withdrawals. I haven't looked at it since before Thanksgiving. That's what I am this year. It's so easy to become wrapped up in the daily craziness of life and only think about the things that are stressful, time-consuming or even sad. I can’t believe it’s already here. It feels like we just started 2011! <br /><br />Just about every year, the week before Thanksgiving I start thinking about turkey. And I don’t mean thinking about eating, but rather, thinking about <u>the</u> Butterball turkey.<br /><br />I don’t know much about turkey. In fact, the idea of cooking such a thing is a little overwhelming. I’ve only cooked one turkey in my life (my mom was sick and I had to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for 9. I kept running back to her bedroom, sometimes with bowl or pie pan and even the turkey in a pan, for her approval or comment.)<br /><br />What I do know, however, is how to win a turkey. You read right, win. Flashback to 198sumthin’. I can’t remember what year exactly. I think we were still living in Hot Springs, so I was under eight. This is when I really wish the scrapbooker in me had been around at this time. I’d have photos, lots of photos. <br /><br />Anyhoo – the local Piggly Wiggly was having a contest to win a Butterball turkey. All one had to do was color a turkey sort of like the one below and they’d be entered in a contest to win. You gotta believe I was all about that. I remember sitting down with my box of 64 Crayola crayons with the built-in-sharpener, and getting to work. Slooooowly outlining the turkey with my raw umber crayon. Gently smoothing the color on in smooth, not-too-hard sweeps. We love books. We love talking about books, deciding which books to read, discussing what we like and don't like about the books we are currently reading. And we've discovered that we love meeting people who write books. There is something exciting about seeing the typically anonymous person behind your favorite book. <br /><br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Sunday we headed out to meet James Dashner, author of <em>The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, </em>and <em>The Death Cure </em>(among others). Don't panic when you read the titles...they aren't full of death and dying...well, a little...oh, never mind. I typically spend 2 hours in the car every weekday, and that's if I don't have errands to run or somewhere special to go in the evening.<br /><br />Believe me, music is amazingly helpful when you are in the car for so long, but even that can get annoying. Books on tape save me. I love reading, and this is as close to reading as I can get while still be able to operate my car safely :)<br /><br />My library has just recently started adding to their e-library and I can download books directly to my iphone. The selection is pretty limited so far, so I've been listening to a lot of books I've already read, but it's an entirely different experience to hear someone else read it! <br /><br />I have found that I have to listen to things that are pretty "light". Mostly books that don't require a lot of thinking or translation in my head. I’ve been making scrapbook layouts for a long time. So there are a bunch of them. And supposedly they are supposed to be displayed in albums. But, I can’t find one I like. I’ve tried every kind out there. Post bound, three-ring, the one recommended by my most favorite famous scrapbooker (that one was actually the best so far, but it’s not perfect). How can we have 500 embellishments, but only 20 types of albums to show off our creations?<br /><br />I love three ring albums, but when they are full, they are heavy, and when you pick them up, the page protectors holding the layouts sag out of the bottom. It’s frustrating. It feels like an eternity since we came back! It really was a wonderful vacation with my besties and their four girls. You heard right. Four. :) But we survived. I was more focused on relaxing than on taking a ton of photos this trip and even the ones I took didn’t turn out so great, but I’m happy to have what I have.<br /><br />I’m amazed when I think about how lucky I am to be a part of this “family” and how much I love these four girls.<br />It was little Miss Emily’s first beach trip, and she spent a lot of time in her stroller just like this. <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; And maybe let the world think I’ve got it together too. <br /><br />I’m learning to let things go. And be okay with it. It’s not easy. There is so much I want to do, so much to learn, so many blogs to read, so many blog posts to share, so many projects to start and finish. I want to be full of the good, creative, and carefree. And sometimes the striving to be all of those things is exhausting. My focus is so much on the would, could and shoulds that they start to overwhelm the dids. <br /><br />My expectations are too high – and the disappointment in myself becomes overwhelming. Before too long I start allowing myself to believe in the failures. Before too long I just don’t attempt anything because I just know it will fail. I become paralyzed. <br /><br />Deep in my heart I know the truth. It’s just a matter of uncovering it and then believing it enough to gather the strength to start living it again.<br /><br />I know that a lot of this is affected by not feeling good and I’ve had a bit of that lately. And work has been insanely demanding and full of conflict. But I think things are starting to look up. <br /><br />Ultimately – I’m supposed to be enjoying life, right? And I am. Right up until the moment I start realizing I’ve let something slip, haven’t been as creative as I’d like, blah, blah, blah. So I’m not going to do that anymore. They've been waiting for a long time. I'm trying to make today the day it happens. Lord help me.</li><li>Only 20 days until I head to the beach. I can't begin to tell you how much I am looking forward to it. Lots of beach and pool time with my besties and the four best little bitties</li><li>Yesterday was my dad's birthday. It's been 22 years since he died and his birthday is still a little difficult. </li><li>My birthday is in 7 days. Having a bit of a struggle with this one. I'm going to be old! Well, at least old for me. And yes, I know I'm young....but the clock is ticking! </li><li>Said birthday above? Celebrated in the best possible way....all of my best girlfriends hanging out. </li><li>Many years ago my brother moved to Australia. In 9 short days he moves back to the US. I can't wait. We've missed him...although I will miss the idea of him being in such a beautiful place as Australia...and the promise of visiting him there again.</li><li>I love the girl who cuts my hair. When I went to visit her on Saturday I wanted bangs and she gave me the best advice ever. "Sweaty bangs aren't cute. Let's wait until fall". I figured out she was completely right about 10 minutes after I left her house. It's hot. And sorted and sorted. It's definitely on the list of least favorite things to do, but when it's finished....I love it! I like seeing the folders on my computer all lined up, perfectly labeled and in order. Ah. <br /><br />Anyhoo - I found some photos I don't think I've shared yet. One of my good friends, <a href="http://www.laurelenglehardt.blogspot.com/">Laurel</a>, her mom Nancy and I went to Port St. Joe to visit another friend and to celebrate my Mom's birthday. We had such a wonderful time with the exception of no internet connection, but we coped. We were really able to cope since Lana (our friend who actually lives in PSJ) was able to secure a beautiful house on Cape San Blas. One side of the house was on the Bay and you could look out the windows on the other side and see the ocean. But I really do love it (at least on the 8x10 swatch on the wall). It’s perfect for the space I’m in, works with the carpeting, will work with everything else I’ve got going on and is light and fresh. Mostly because she was sooo down to earth and completely in awe that she was there to teach. She has a full time job and a side business, but still manages to do something creative daily. I just couldn’t believe it…until she sprung the news that she and her husband do not own a television. Huh? It was eye opening for me to say the least. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">That being said, this project wasn’t my most favorite…mostly because it involved over 5 hours of hot glue hell. All of that jute and twine? Glued strand by strand. I’ve never heard my cussing or “owwww’s” in one room in my life. I’m glad I finished it though. First of all, it involved sewing. Me and the sewing machine – not necessarily on good terms. But I actually sewed it! As you can see it’s a bit lopsided, but considering this was sewn with no pins or ironing, it’s not half bad. Oh wait – I said NO ironing. That’s wrong. The base of this bag is made from……wait for it……plastic grocery bags! Yup. Plastic grocery bags that have been ironed between sheets of freezer paper until the melt enough to bond and form a more sturdy “fabric”. The colored strips are other shopping bags and pieces from coffee packaging. Which means it’s time to get back to blogville, too! <br /><br />To say that Inspired was good would be an understatement. I’m working on getting photos of our projects and will post them soon!<a href="http://www.laurelenglehardt.blogspot.com/"> Laurel</a> has already posted hers here. Check it out.<br /><br />The name of this post really should be “<u>What I’ve NOT Read</u>”. Seriously. I was going to catch up with my book posts….only to discover that I didn’t read anything in April. Wait, that’s not true. I’m positive I read at least three books, but for the life of me, I can’t remember their names. Pooh. It’ll come to me.<br /><br />Which brings me to a little dilemma. I’m embarrassed by myself. I guess I better back up to explain that statement. I read a lot. And by a lot I mean, I start to get a little sweaty if I realize I’ve left the house without a book. Even if I never have the opportunity to read during the day, I always have a book in my purse or in my car. That being said, I go through a lot of books. Here’s the part I get embarrassed about…..they aren’t always intellectual, heart-rending, mind-bending, life-altering books. There is a lot of chick lit, mystery, and, dare I say it, romance. <br /><br />I never felt this way before I joined a book club. I l.o.v.e.d my book club. We read intellectually stimulating books. We had hugely interesting conversations about those books, full of personal introspection, comparisons of those fictional worlds to the real world, character analysis and threw out terms like “undeveloped characters”, “beautiful prose” and “plot development”. It was intensely gratifying and it brought about an entirely new thought process for me when it came to books. And somehow I began to believe that any book that didn’t bring about those types of conversations or thoughts was inappropriate. That somehow I wasn’t as intelligent if I read anything else. Granted, I never stopped reading the books that shall not be named, I just stopped talking about them. <br /><br />Those four books in April? They weren’t books we’d ever consider reading in book club. And so I’ve conveniently forgotten them. But I enjoyed every moment I read them. In secret. Oh dear. This is all so sordid. <br /><br />So, the question is….should I list them in my roundup posts? And get over my embarrassment? Does anyone else suffer from the same affliction?<br /><br />Please say yes – even if it’s not true.
