Is being profound a necessity or an indulgence?

Is being profound a necessity or an indulgence?

My Aunt Pea posted that question on her blog today.  And was surprised to discover I had strong feelings when I started thinking about what my answer to it would be.  I do have to say, my thought process is a little different from hers, though.

Being profound is both a necessity and an indulgence.

Dictionary.com's definition of profound is "being or going far beneath what is superficial, external, or obvious."  Profound thought (and the writing of the thought) is paramount to our development as human beings.  Mentally, psychologically, spiritually, even physically.  It is difficult to change, unless we are able to have profound thought.  It's those thoughts that create awareness, peace, anger, sadness, joy.   Those thoughts and ideas are the catalyst many people use for life-altering events, be them positive or negative.

*Standing up on soapbox…clearing throat…*

Hiding behind the need for profound thought is an indulgence.  Not everything has to be profound.  Every word said or written does not have to be life changing.  I think it's perfectly fine, and dare I say, enjoyable to have moments of superficial, obviously surface thoughts, emotions and ideas.  By allowing yourself to have those moments you are creating memories, relaxing your mind, allowing yourself to just plain 'ol exist.

Have you ever paused to consider that the constant search for the next profound thought, the inability to communicate unless it involves something profound is in large part an excuse for hiding?  For not allowing the true you to be seen?  For putting yourself up on a pedestal as the author of deep thought and only accessible by people with the same mindset?

As an average individual (as a non-political leader, non-activist etc.) our future generations are not going to remember that you only deemed words worthy to be written if you considered them profound.  They may not even care.  When I think about the things I long to know about past generations (and what I have discovered others wish to know), their "profoundness" isn't really of interest.  What is of interest is their personality, their thoughts on momentous occasions, and details of their lives.  Of course, profound thought is involved in each of those activities, and so it is important to document that as well, but for those who hide behind the need for "profound all the time", is it worth it to lose all of the other details, because it didn't reach your high thought expectations?

There's the end of my "profound" thought of the day…..

Cosmo Cricket

So, Cosmo Cricket announced their top 12 choices for the second round of their design team audition and I wasn't one of them.  Shoot!  But I have to say, they had 300 applicants.  Whoa!   I have to say, I have been impressed with how all of those who tried out have so graciously accepted the decision and how supportive they have been of the finalists!  I'm impressed.

I'm gonna keep pluggin' away.  I'm determined!

The traveling cupcake birthday! I don’t know if I remember this because I actually remember it, or if it is because I’ve seen the photographs for so many years. This was either my 4th or 5th birthday. It was a traveling birthday party. We went to several different places and had cupcakes everywhere! I remember that we went to see Bernie (I’m pretty sure that was his name), our neighbor. I wonder who else?

Cosmo Cricket

I am loving the new lines from Cosmo Cricket! Here's a quick layout of Victoria at her dance recital. I missed the big event, but when my good friend Misti emailed me this pictures...I was shocked! Victoria can't really be only 5 years old. Granted she's almost 6, but certainly not sixteen!!!! We're going to have to beat the boys away with a stick when the time comes!

Looking at this layout reminded me of the LaLit mini album I did a while back using paper from Storytime...

Here's a link to my previous post!

More new layouts for Scrap Chic! I’m waiting to see how long it will take for my brother to take offense at this layout of him and the koala bears! It’s all in good fun – I promise!

And here’s a not so great photo of the hidden journaling card.

I couldn’t resist this photo of Elizabeth. And I got to try out a new technique I learned from Tim Holtz’ blog about using strips of paper in the Dymo labelmaker instead of the manufacturer’s tape. It worked out really, really well!

Love Letters to a Stranger

One of my newly found photos of my Dad. I personally think he was a handsome guy, even if his ears did stick out! J The most fascinating thing about this group of photos is that about ten of them have little love notes on the back. And they aren’t written to my mother! Luckily, these were all taken, as best we can tell, before she met him. Now the question is...who is "Sweet Patches?" How long did they go out? Why did they break up? The list could go on forever!

New Scrap Chic Layouts

New layouts – completed a couple of weeks ago for Scrap Chic! I borrowed Laurel “The Queen of Scrapbooking Tools” circle cutter for the layout of Jonathan and I am seriously considering getting one for myself!

C'est la vie...

I have a "project" problem. No matter how hard I try, I always have to have at least one and preferably ten going on at one time. One such of those projects is the "photo scanning for posterity sake" project. I have all of these old photos that have no digital copy, and most of them don't even have negatives. It's important to me to preserve them by scanning, even if they never make it into scrapbooking pages. And also important that eventually, they all make it into an album so that our family can look through them. Right now, they reside in a big plastic bin and a few photo sorting boxes. I am ashamed to say, the plastic bin has been in a storage unit for the past 7 years and who knows where it was before then. Probably in our basement. So, now I'm trying to organize and decide if it will cost more, timewise and financially, to send them off to be scanned by a professional company or scan them myself. It seems more economical to scan them myself at a 600 dpi, but in the past couple of weeks I've been doing some "practice" scans and boy howdy, does it take a long time for each photo. I have more time than money, but if I decide to scan everything, I will have to sacrifice other things that I already spend a lot of time on. And I'm not sure it's worth sacrificing other things that are just as important. So, I've started shopping around for a professional company that has good reviews that I might potentially send everything out to. It's a quandary… one I'm sure everyone has an opinion on. Do you have any suggestions?

Meanwhile, as I've been looking through all of the photos, I find I've become fascinated with what in the past have been just old family photos. It surely has to do with developing as a scrapbooker, but I just can't stand to see a photo and then have to wonder what the background story is. I want to know! Unfortunately, some stories will just have to remain untold, but I'll do my best to fill in the blanks where I can.

The picture above is one I took on a whirlwind trip to Paris. This park is right next to the Eiffel Tower and specifically remember taking the photo because I fell in love with that big ol' dog. It reminds me of Nana from Peter Pan. And I loved thinking that it must come to that park every day with his or her owner. In retrospect, I wish I'd gotten a closer picture, or petted it or talked to his or her owner…but c'est la vie. Hehe. Sorry, I just had to get that in there since we're talking about Paris! J

More soon!

Places I've Visited...

So, I promise a real post soon, but I couldn’t resist this little exercise, as found on Misti’s blog. I had to include a map of places I’ve visited throughout the world (I think there might be a couple missing)...

I’m surprised to see the map of US places I’ve visited. I’ve always thought that I’ve been nowhere in the US, but apparently not. It is glaringly obvious, though, I need to see more of the US of A.

A little inspiration.

A little Tuesday inspiration. I love these bookshelves and how they surround the sofa. Engenious! I'm storing this idea away for that someday, house on hill.

Favorite scrapbooking supplies...

If I had to pick my three most favorite scrapbooking supplies...I'd have a hard time deciding on the top three...but since I'm writing about it...I've already figured it out. Heheee.

Numero Uno

American Crafts Thickers In any and all colors and styles!

I just have one thing to say about these wonderful darlings...
"Have you seen my Thicker Thet?"

Numero Dos

Basic Grey paper and embellishments. I love just about all of them, but I think Recess is my most favorite, for the moment anyway.

Numero Tres

Sharpies! Extra fine, black to be exact. If you had asked me if I ever used a sharpie on a scrapbooking page this time last year, I would have shuddered, but as I learn to use my own handwriting on a page, I've come to adore them! I have one in about every color, but still seem to always reach for the black one.

What are your favorite scrapbooking supplies?
